Cap1 "Good Credit"?

Hello,

I'm just starting to build my credit, and I have an entry level Capital One card as one of my credit cards. I have been doing a lot of reading about how difficult it is to get CLIs and such from Cap1, and how people who have had difficulties getting CLIs were able to increase their limits by combining cards.

At some point, I would like to get a No Hassle Cash Rewards card from Capital One to combine with my entry level card, but I don't want to have to pay an annual fee. In order to get a No Hassle Cash Rewards card with no annual fee, Cap1 says you need "Good Credit" which they define as:

* I have had a loan or credit card for three years or more
* I have had a credit card with a credit limit above $5,000
* I have not been more than 60 days late on any credit card, medical bill, or loan in the last year

My question is: do I really need to have three years of credit history to have "Good Credit" in Cap1's view? What if I've had 9 months to a year of perfect credit use (1% - 9% util, PIF every month, on time, no baddies, no/few inquiries)? That far exceeds the requirement of simply not having a 60+ day late in the past year, but won't be over three years of history and might not result in getting another card with a credit limit above $5,000.

Has anyone with less than three years of credit history had success in getting one of Cap1's cards for people with "Good Credit" or "Excellent Credit," or does the system automatically deny anyone with a limited [but possibly perfect] history?

Thanks,
Nick

Re: Cap1 "Good Credit"?

you can go on their website and see if they have any preapproved offers for you.  it is not an app just a look see.  there is also a back door # you can call and ask.  Other pre-approved sites are WAMU, HSBC< AMEX and BofA.

My only problem with the pre-approvals is that both BOA and Cap1 failed to pre-approve me for any cards, but then approved me for their cards regularly...

If you are opted-out, then they won't have any pre-approved offers because they can not do a soft pull.

I think it is better to be not be pre-approved and then get approved, than to be pre-approved and not get approved-- which is what Cap 1 did to the spouse.

Re: Cap1 "Good Credit"?

I just recieved a new Cap One card and it is from the "good credit" category. It's the rewards one where you get 2% back from grocery/drug stores and 1% elsewhere (something like that).

I only have a 18 month credit history and my highest card limit is $2000.00, so I guess you don't need to meet those guidelines, as long as your credit is good.

Thanks, siangirl34. That's just what I was hoping.

Congratulations!  If I may ask, what was your Experian Credit Score before you were approved for your Capital One credit card?  Also, did you have any Bankruptcies on your CR?

Re: Cap1 "Good Credit"?

I couldn't tell you what the real score was when I applied, except that my Ex was @ 712 a couple weeks ago before I tanked it applying for a bunch of cards (Capitol One was last, and at that point I believe the score had dropped a fair bit ((had 2 new accounts reporting and about 10 new inquiries)). My Fako Ex score was well over 700 prior to all my apps and was down to 607 @ the time of Cap One application.  I don't have any BK or negative items on my CR.
