Which Amex are you looking at? Charge or revolver?

I agree with the others that with your short history and the fact that you had to recon for the freedom, your odds of getting approved for an amex isn't great. But assuming that you have no baddies, low inq's, YMMV here.

However, I would recommend that you research a little more about Amex and the card you actuall want before apping. Not knowing the difference between a charge card or a revolver is kind of a big deal.

OK I did some reading and I think a charge card I have to pay in full every month, which is what I'd do either way, correct?

The criteria for a charge card approval are lower.  That being said, do you want a charge card just so you can start a relationship with Amex at an early age?  For what your disposal income is right now I don't think it is financially prudent to get one because of the higher than normal AFs.  Like some people have said why don't you wait a year or so or until you are finished with school to apply.  Amex is not going anywhere.  Just because you can get a particular card doesn't mean you should I guess though that is up to you to decide we can only just give our opinion.

Re: Chances of getting an AMEX

A charge card is one that you HAVE to pay in full every month.  Yes, that is correct.

A credit card (revolver) you SHOULD pay in full every month, but you CAN carry a balance from month to month.

IIRC

I advised against going for the Amex at this time and OP had joined the garden

Before you app think...
Have you done your research of the CC?
Does it fit your spending?
Do you have a plan for the bonus w/o going into debt?
Can you afford the AF?
Do you know the cards benefits? Is it worth the HP?

Re: Chances of getting an AMEX

With an income that low, you don't really need an Amex nor should you get one right now. You're not even sure what you're looking for yet, so I'd echo the other posters in saying that you should wait and do some research. As a general rule, given your income level you should avoid cards with AFs unless you're only getting them for signup bonuses.
