I never have, but I have known a few people who have charged new Ferraris on their Black cards.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. This black card is, im sure, the only reason im allowed to test drive now. Several months ago I wasnt even allowed to test used 5K cars. Im looking into a new car but even a 5K deposit on the card helps with MR points. I love points :smileyhappy:

Do you have to show your cards before they let you test drive any?  I mean, how do they know this early that you have the Black Card?

Re: Charge Car on Charge Card?

I didn't use Amex but I used Chase Visa to buy a $7K used truck from a local dealer. No problem with dealer or Chase. I timed the purchase one day after the statement cut so I had close to 60 days to pay in full, plus 1% cash back. I had the registration and Pink slip in hand long before I PIF. I wonder what would have happened if I had defaulted?

I realize you are talking a lot more than $7K.

Was it a small dealer or a large one? We have several dealers around. Trying to gauge which one I would have the best luck at.

Re: Charge Car on Charge Card?

I have charged 20K+ (8 years ago) for a downpayment of a new Lexus RX300.  I called Amex ahead of time and got clearance.

Re: Charge Car on Charge Card?

I have been told by a dealership they won't charge more than $5k on any credit card... I put the $5k on Amex Optima Platinum to hold car and look into finance.  I have also put $3k on a Chase Card many years ago.

I think it just depends where you live, how bad a dealership wants to sell a car and the ability of the buyer.  I don't think Visa/MC/Amex are opening a Merchant account for Beverly Hills Mercedes saying you can not charge more than $5k on a customers card to buy a car!  It's win win for everyone reallly!

The comment about fraud, not sure how that might end up happening unless the person actually duplicated the credit card... I mean you do have to register the card and have insurance etc. that's a lot of documents to match up. no?

Small local dealer. But I can't imagine anyone, large or small, turning down a sale, other than for other technical reasons, for a small percentage. Especially in times like this.

This has nothing to do with anything, but try saying "Charge Car on Charge Card" five times fast.....

Re: Charge Car on Charge Card?

Tanner, when I was much younger I worked as a cashier at a car dealer for a few weeks...just about the only thing I remember from working there was the guy who wanted to pay for his brand new Mercedes with his Amex.  I forget what the exact rules were, but I remember I was trying to explain to the salesman that I couldn't do that.  The manager came over and told me "Just do it.  This guy just won the lottery, he's good for it!"

  LOL!
