I took advantage of one of the cash back offers from opening a Chase checking account in 2008, they did a HP. I later switched to BOA for checking, which resulted in another HP. BOA did not require an HP when I later added a savings account as well. I'm in NY though, so not sure if it differs from state to state.
Just opened a Chase Total Checking online on Monday, and checked my EX report today, no HP. They did SP me twice though, once on Monday, and once today.
opened a checking account a month ago and no HP
I just read my Signature Card.
I want to add that on the Signature Card it states: "...I authorize the Bank, at its discretion, to obtain credit reports and employment verifications on me."
So I guess if you are going to open a Checking account, be prepared for a HP because its possible, though not probable.
I was a current CC customer when I opened my checking account so maybe thats why they ddin't do a HP, just SPs
So here's a bit of an update:
I kind of lost track of time, then today realized it was the 14th and the coupon expires tomorrow. I did some googling around and found a $200 bonus coupon with a new checking account. I gave a local Chase branch a phone call, and asked why they needed a SSN, he simply said that they run your info through Chexsystems to make sure the account can be opened, he said nothing about pulling a credit report. So, on that note, I am going to finish my essay and haul a** down to the bank as I am leaving a minimum balance in my CU and will move to Chase for a 6 month perio, simply to recieve the bonus.
I'm starting to woner if it is really worth all this
I opened checking and savings 2 months ago and they did a soft pull for each account

For me, it's been worth it. Between $300 in bonuses plus the 10+10 Freedom/Checking... more than worth it.

I want to open a chase to go with my Freedom, but I dont have a coupon. I dont like the idea of buying one off ebay, so I guess Ill wait and hope to come across one. $1500 minimum to avoid fees...thats a pretty good return for only 6 months of leaving it sit.
When I opened a checking and a savings account at my local Chase branch last year, they also asked if I wanted a credit card. I said yes and that resulted in a HP followed by approval for a Chase Freedom Visa with a $5,000 CL. That was a my highest CL ever. This year I opened a second checking account in-branch at Citibank. They asked me the same question, I also said yes, and after a HP, I was instantly approved for the Citi ThankYou Premier MC with a CL of $6,500. Applying in-branch has worked wonders for me in terms of approvals and high CLs. Anyway, I don't think they would've done a HP if I had only opened the checking & savings accounts. To my knowledge only CUs do that. YMMV.
Today I applied for the Total Chase Checking and Savings accounts; and I don't have any credit products with them. I'm happy to report that they pulled a soft inquiry on Experian under JP Morgan Chase. I hope this helps - I'm going to wait for a pre-approved offer before I app for a freedom or CSP card. Cheers!

At first I was ready to go in and open a new account, while still leaving my CU account open. I was wondering though, does Chase do a HP of your credit if you open a savings/checking account with them? If so, then forget it..
