I wouldn't be surprised. In general, most consumers hate the rotating category thing, and prefer the straightforward cards. It makes sense for Chase to move away from the rotating thing.

Now, on a cash back basis, 1.5% is just average and there's many options out there. The differentatior would be if it's 1.5% in cash or if it's still going to be UR points. Travel enthusiasts would be excited if it were 1.5 UR (though many still won't be approved for a long time under 5/24), but 1.5% cash is not especially standout or exciting.

I'd take it as a rumor for now, but again, would not be surprised as most consumers are not a fan of rotating categories.

Personally I would love this idea. I only have my Citi DC as my general 2% CB which is a mastercard. I need a Visa for Costco and applied for the Citi Hilton card which is now my Costco card because of all the Visa cards I have I rather build up my Hilton points than CB with the current offerings that I have. with a 1.5% CB card with Chase I would probably move some of my Costco spending to my Chase Visa and for some people I know only have a Chase Freedom ...or use it a lot. One of my friends who had a bat turn in credit with a 600 Credit score still has his Freedom so getting a 1.5% CB for him would be great since he uses it 99% of the time. My mother also uses her Freedom a lot over her other cards so for somebody who doesn't maximize her rewards like some people here a 1.5% CB is great for a card that probably a lot of people have.

Doing a little research, the source of the rumor says that it is basically a new product, "Chase Freedom Unlimited". It could be a quick / near term rollout as a new product, or replacement product.

Existing Freedom cardholders ("Chase Freedom") would keep the 5% rotating categories, which makes sense since they published those for 2016 already. These 5% categories would likely continue, until nerfed.

Whether the "Unlimited" version earned UR points or plain cash back is an open question.

Just one more reason for me to continue to lean on my Freedom card while the 10 points per swipe still shows up on my statement.

Well I hope I could PC into this new card than because the Chase freedom as it is has little action even though still being in my wallet lol

I've always wondered if the Discover Double Cash promotion isn't a front for something similar.

With the categories they were offering in the 4th quarter, I'd probably prefer 1.5% cash back over that. With that happening I wouldn't need a general spend card like the EDP. I do wonder how it would affect "the combo" with CSP.

I havent bothered with the category spending since 2013. I have been using my Citi DC since June 2015 almost exclusively and made over around $200 in CB so far. Not worth the trouble. I actually sort of remembered Discover had travel this quarter and didn't realize that airplane tickets aren't covered in it until after I bought the tickets on it which I would of used a different CC.

I would likely be interested in switching over in September, because restaurants and grocery stores are coming up and those are some of the best quarters for me. While they will let everyone keep there 5x categories for 2016 because they already announced them I am not sure they will keep doing them for 2017. If I knew they were doing the merger in 2017 then I would change my card in September (right after I do my holiday shopping). If they don't do it in 2017 then I will want to wait to see what the 2017 categories are before deciding.

That's lame that they don't cover airline tickets as travel.

okay. so i called again and spoke to an american native and she stated that they are going to run the two cards side by side. the freedom will be separate than the freedom unlimited. they are not doing away with existing freedoms with 5% categories and she sounded like she was more sure of her answers than the first person i talked to. so i believe stephanie over abib. lol.

It would have to be two seprate cards if the new Freedom Unlimited is really 1.5% cash back and not UR points, unless Chase did a mega-nerf of existing UR point balances in Freedom accounts, to convert them to cash equivalent.

On the other hand, if the Freedom Unlimited is 1.5 UR points per dollar, that changes the discussion measurably. A no AF card with 1.5UR points is quite interesting, in many areas. Linked to a CSP, not a bad card to have those together.

Just for the sake of argument, why would they charge $95 for CSP with mostly 1 point per dollar (2x dining/travel), yet have unlimited 1.5 for free on the Freedom? That's why I think it will be cash, not UR.

Your paying the AF to transfer the points not for the UR bonus

Oh I don't have the card and the post just listed it as travel not ground travel. That would make sense then.
