Do bars count in the 5%? I was looking at my amex transactions, and it showed as restaurant, to I know what is a bar. They serve no food.
Any input?
I know its late in the quarter but IM going out and might be spending enough to make the 5% work for me, rather then just cash.

Amex merchant category codes (MCC) and Visa/MC are not necessarily the same. That being said, there's a decent chance that it might be coded as a restaurant for Visa/MC. Worst case scenario -- you use your Chase Freedom and get 1% back, which is still better than 0% with cash. Best case, of course -- you get the 5%. I would use the Freedom and see how it shows up on your statement.

So, I haven't found this problem with the Freedom yet, but I know with my Forward that there are bars coded as "Restaurants - Drinking/Bars" or something like that. Those are given only 1% compared to "Restaurants - Eating/Dining". I forget the exact titles, but there is a difference. Finding which places are coded in which manner is a toss up, and as Tinu stated, your best bet is to just give it a try and see what happens. Then just remember that for next time
+1
It is just 1% to my knowledge.
The only cards that gives 3-5% for all kinds of restaurants are by Citi.
I was in this situation last night, decided to give it to the PRG instead.
