I have a SLATE Mastercard the will be converting. Will cards above 5K automtically become Visa Signature?

Chase converted my Chase Freedom MasterCard to a Visa on June 23. No letter or any notice. Logged in to the online account site and there was the new Chase Freedom Visa Account number. Contacted the CSRs who informed me the plastic would go out next week. My statement cut and said I would receive the card by August 15, 2013. Bummed! I don't need another Visa Card.

Thats interesting i will have to keep an eye on my freedom its an MC, I think the only other MC i have is my cap one QS, which i hardly ever use.

This was communicated close to a year ago. Shouldn't be catching anyone by surprise, really.

I was bummed when I first learned about it considering my state's comptroller only accepts MC that was paid by my Ink MC, and my university only accepted MC that was paid by my sapphire MC. In a way, however, I suppose this was all a blessing in disguise and led me begin diversifying my porfolio with other banks. Up until that point, ALL of my products were through JPMC. Kinda scary now that I look back.

NegotiatorRogerSmith - yes this was reviewed a long time ago. For myself there was never any official or unofficial communication from JP Morgan Chase or First USA on the switch from Master Card to Visa. Had I not read it here on "myfico" ... I likely would not have known. Also, I am whinning because I did not need another Visa so I vented! My only reason for obtaining the Chase Freedom Master Card was to have a high CL Master Card. Was able to obtain this card by a work around through the Master Card website when Chase had already shut down their accepting direct MC apps so it was special. Now for my usage pattern it is useless!

I'm surprised about how few Mastercards are out there. My only two are sallie Mae and cap one quicksilver. I will always need atleast one cause of sams club

Forgive me, but can somebody please explain the difference between Visa and MC to me? I lump them together in my head as pretty much the same thing with Amex and Discover being different.

nmbrsgrl - your lumping them together is pretty much spot on. Many years ago the two networks often were not available at the same merchants. Over time they started appearing together at the same merchants and processing and the like have evolved allowing merchants to take several different merchant networks at the same time (look at gas pumps and see all the various networks they accept). Some travelers report that some networks are more accepted in one country over another so the idea was have a card on each network just in case. As to AX and Discover it has been pretty common to find areas where they were not as available. Many travelers on this website have found more acceptance of Discover and not as many problems on the need for EMV Chip Cards as originally thought (not factoring in security).
