I tried to recon the Chase Slate again today, explained I'd like to get my balances transferred and pay my cards off, but was still told my util was too high on my other cards. Do you think I could call and ask to be considered for the Freedom card instead? Based on Credit Karma, it looks like that card is easier to get. Would this result in another HP? Does anyone have experience with this?
I think it would be considered a new application rather than a recon; I suspect your best option is to simply recon the slate again knowing Chase.
Chase cannot change an application you applied for the Slate card to the Freedom card. You will have to apply again (which will result in another hard inquiry).
But you might be able to get that Slate with another Chase Recon rep.
What are you current FICO scores for the three credit beaureas? Inquires in the last 12 months?
Also credit limits and amount of credit used on those credit cards and AAoA?

If at first you do not succeed....................TRY AGAIN!!!!
Good luck!!!!!

Thanks for your help! I'm trying to pay all my cards off, which is why I'm applying for BT cards with good intro rates, like Slate, so that I can cut my interest payments during this process.
I was approved for the Discover IT card yesterday with a $1200 limit, but the HP hasn't hit my report yet.

Haven't been 30 days late in over 1.5 years. One public record (fed tax lien $8K) filed in 2004, released in 2009 (working on getting it withdrawn).
Express screwed me on my utilization by lowering my limit below my balance for a payment that wasn't even 30 days late in June 2012. My former limit on my Express card was 2,300...they dropped it to $550.

I think you should be in pretty good shape once those balances report on your credit reports in one months time (at the most).
I would also call up Macy's and get a credit limit increase. Make sure to tell the representative that you do not want them to do a hard inquiry for the credit line increase (they usually do a soft one anyways). Make sure to ask for like $5,000 so that they can counter offer (and they probably will) a lower amount.
Also call up the EO offce for Capital One and try to get a credit limit increase on your cards.
For each credit limit increase you request for each of your cards (I would try all of the current credit cards you have), make sure to tell the representative that you do not want them to pull (hard pull) your credit report, which will result in another inquiry.
This way once you apply you'll more likely be able to get a better (higher) credit line.
Good luck! And you can check when the balances have reported (it will happen on different days), by using creditkarma.com which is free.

Thanks for the advice...I think I will give Macy's a call
I've been banging down Cap One's door since December for a CLI. Finally got a letter regarding yet another denial for a CLI...it reads:
"Thank you for contacting Capital Oneregarding your account. Unfortunately, we cannot approve a
credit line increase for the following reason(s):
This Capital One account is not currently eligible for a credit line increase upon request. We're
reviewing our policy for increasing credit limits. While we do this, we won't be able to offer you
more credit."
I emailed the EO today, so hopefully I get some traction with that route...that letter is unbelieveable!

Yeah I recieved that letter once a year as well from Capital One (I tried for a CLI every year but every year denied).
I have paid in full and never late on any payments since I opened account with them in 2006. They were my first credit card.
I emailed the EO office and wrote a detailed email about being disappointed regarding my CL with my Cap1 card.
It had been $300 when I applied and then increased automatically to $500 the next year. Ever since it had been stuck at the $500 mark. Emailed EO and got a call the next day from a very nice lady. She asked about my concerns and how to resolve them. I originally requested a credit limit increase to match my Chase Freedom card that had limit of $7,500. She had asked me if I would take a lower amount and I said, "yeah". I recieved a call back in 5 days from the same lady saying they were only able to increase to $3000. I told them that I had no use for the card and will probably cancel the card if the limit isn't increased to at least $5,000. She said she would sent to the underwriter again and see if she can get it approved. 2 days later she called me informing me she was able to get the $5,000 approved.
EO office has been very helpful. I think it's almost impossible to get a decent CLI with capital one through Customer Service.
Sorry for the long story, but basically try to get increases on all your credit cards by calling the banks and requesting increases be done with a "soft pull/inquiry". If they insist on a hard pull/inquiry I would just say "no".
Good luck! And let me know if you have any other questions!

they rejected you probably because you went overlimit on one card, and you're close to maxing out 1 card.
you might be able to somehow convince a credit analyst about your 92% util on your macy's card, but no prime lender is gonna approve you for a new card when you're overspent almost 50% more than what they extended to you.
I know it's just a few hundred dollars, but lenders care as much about the % as the dollar amount. Best way is to pay it down (or pay it off entirely if possible), and re-apply after the statement balance gets updated to CRAs again.
Grats to getting approved for discover btw! If you are to wait for your statement balance get updated, chances are discover would have reported to the CRAs as well. It is hard to get new lines of credit immediately after just getting one.

OP: Also I would try Chase recon maybe once more and explain you want to build a relationship with them and that you've paid down all your credit cards but they haven't reported to the beaureas yet. They should approve you for at least a $500 limit to start off.
