Chase denial, recon, approval!

[ Edited ]

I finally applied for an airline card - the United Mileage Plus Explorer Visa card.  I got a 14-30 day response so I kept calling the app status line to see if it would change.  I finally called a number I saw on a thread here and talked to a very nice guy.  He told me I was declined and looked at my report and said he couldn't understand why.  He put me on hold and when he came back he first said it was because I had applied for the Freedom in under a year (10 months ago - had to recon that denial too!).  Then he left and came back and asked me to explain a 10-year old Chase baddie that is not even on my reports.  I told him I honestly do not remember ever having a Chase card back then (but I didn't deny it, I burned some cards back then), but that I treat my finances a lot differently now than I did 10+ years ago.

Anyway, he kept looking and said he liked the fact that I have an American Express and he liked that I had a BOA high limit card (I closed it a while ago,  it was a secured card).  He said he'd put in for a reconsideration for $5000 (I think that's the minimum).  I called the line later last night and it's approved!  I'm pretty happy even though I'm still learning about these points/miles!

I want to thank Open123 for explaining it all to me to help me better understand what I'm getting into.  CSP should be next!  This is 2 Chase denials/recons/successes!  They are tough sometimes!

Congrats on the approval :smileyhappy:    On a side note, I had to call Chase yesterday due to a mix up, my CSR also did a softie on my report and mentioned that I did have new accounts, (Amex) but that Chase isn't concerned with those new accounts actually look good on my report.

I'm wondering if an Amex account actually helps you get in with Chase :smileywink:

You're welcomed.

The UA is a great airline card loaded with very unique perks and benefits.  When combined with the CSP, you can have approximately 100k UA miles (good for a business class flight to just about any destination) which would otherwise take a couple of years to earn.

Congrats on your new card!

Re: Chase denial, recon, approval!

Congrats, great story!

I've had a good run-in with Chase recently. I was approved for a Chase Freedom earlier this mornth...but with only a $500 CL. This was much too low to be of any real benefit so I used the back door number for the Chase Executive Ofc. in IL and requested an increase to $1500. The lady said she had to send it over to the lending dept. and would be back to me within a day. She called me in a few hours and said I'd been aproved for the increase. Chase ain't so bad after all.

Can you elaborate what you mean?

Oddly enough (or not), they mentioned this supposed "baddie" with my Freedom recon first.  I have also previously had a Chase checking account and 2 former car loans through them.  I NEVER remember having an old Chase card.  Hmmm....

I sure can...

Chase is notorious for denying anyone with prior deliquents with Chase or any company Chase devoured during their acquisitions (Wamu, Providian et al). The best I've ever heard from someone who sucessfully reconned a blacklist decision was a $500 slate card (those are few and far between and the CLs never grow). The fact that you were approved for a freedom, with a decent limit with a prior Chase baddie makes you a pioneer regarding Chase's blacklisting, and reconning policies. This is news I've not heard of in my research of thousands of post read (here, and other sites) over the past couple of years. It could have been a really nice rep, or better yet Chase softening their requirements for getting back in their good graces. I hope to hear more stories like this in the future as it could give me a glimmer of hope to get in with them as opposed to using DWs Freedom :smileytongue:
