Chase is bad with math =)

Get 20% off travel redemptions—with no restrictions or blackout dates—when booked through Ultimate Rewards. For example, 50,000 points is worth $625 in travel rewards.

Anyone ever notice this? places online state 20% or 25% travel bonus. but this is from Chase.com directly.

they state 20% but 50,000 x 1.25 = $625  20% would only equal $600

Also they got pictures stating 20% more for travel! that's $1934 in travel on my rewards page, yet that's really 25% more not 20%

and here I thought banks were smarter than that Smiley Wink

The savings on a $625 purchase is 20% ( 20% of 625 is $125). It depends on how you want to spin it.

Re: Chase is bad with math =)

I'm still not getting my extra 10% bonus points for being a Chase checking customer. I'll have to call them up again and see what the deal is. Last time they had to go back and credit my rewards balance.

Re: Chase is bad with math =)

depends how you are reading it. a 20% discount is the same as a 25% bonus-inverse relationship

UR mall is is a 20% discount on travel with CSP. IE what normally cost 500, subtract 20%, which is 100, costs 400.

Inversely, you have 400 points, add 25%, which is 100, and that equals 500.

So they can say either 1) save 20% on travel booked through Ultimate Rewards or 2) 40,000 points(worth 500 dollars towards travel-IE 25% bonus) and both are correct statements.

When I go into your Freedom account, under Rewards, there is a Rewards Program Details link I can click and it'll bring me to the detail for the 10 & 10 program that states

"As a Chase Checking customer, you get even more exclusive benefits.

  • Earn 10% extra pointson every $1 you spend
  • Plus 10 bonus points on every purchase"

I'd check if you have this.

AMEX: $25,000, CSR: $10,000, Chase Priority Club: $1,500, Freedom: $5000, Freedom Unlimited: $1000, Discover: $21,000, BoA $11,000, WF Cash Wise: $5000

Did you get both your Freedom card and Chase checking account before they discontinued the old 10 & 10 program?

Not that I'm aware of. Just the monthly statements from Ultimate Rewards. They itemize how the points are earned, but the transactions are aggregated.

What would be nice would be if that put the merchant categorization next to each transaction in your activity/transaction log, like AmEx does. I can usually figure out if something is amiss with my points, but it involves creating a spreadsheet and manually going through things.
