I was actually a bit annoyed - and surprised - that I had to talk to someone to activate my card. Never had that happen before.

Same here, what i do is I take the 20 dollar gift card and cancel after i use the gift card.

That can and will destroy your AAoA.  I'd take it easy with the shopping cart trick, many people regret (myself included) opening so many cards with that method.

Yeah, I took that into account when I started the Shoppingcart trick, however my oldest card is 1 year old.
