Credit Card @ Pawn Shop?

My mom has used her AMEX at a pawn shop before & she never had a problem. I also use my CC's at random stores for blu-rays all the time (from pawn shops to BestBuy) & didn't hear a peep from anybody. I need to stop though I have like 400 I think.
