A similar thing happened to me last year. My wife's citi card that she's had for 15+ years was carrying very large balance transfer amount when I missed 3 payments in 4 months (yes, bad husband). Anyway they hit us with the big apr increase and threatened to close her account. She explained the situation and they reversed course. One thing that helped is that we signed up for autopayment in an amount greater than the minimum.
