What's the best way to get a credit card limit increase without asking for one?

It depends on the creditor. Most prefer you to use the card heavily. Leaving a balance or doing a balance transfer to that card is sometimes is sometimes favored upon as well for certain lenders, such as Barclays. Certain cards such as capitalone credit builder cards will rarely ever get any automated CLIs.

For most cards, regular usage and paying more than the minimum every month.

Best way is to research cards that give steady increases, like ones that are issued by GE..they often reward regular use and over the minimum payments..

Use the card so heavily that you have to pay it off in between statement dates in order to spend more than your limit would allow.

I don't know how deeply they analyze, but presumably they want to give CLIs to profitable customers.  So I would guess at least some of this heavy spend should be in "normal", not bonus, categories.
