DCU Credit Card

What's your experience with their cards? Do they hand out nice chunky SL's? Just wondering if it's worth the AAoA/new account hit. I'm locked out of the Chase freedom for a while, not sure if I should double down or stay the course on the path to getting it. Plan on probably app'ing for a Venture and maybe one other card soon, when my inq's age to a year at the end of the month

Re: DCU Credit Card

This post will be moved to "applications or Credit cards", since this isn't an approval of any kind, but merely asking questions about this card.

Re: DCU Credit Card

I was approved 11/2014 with a $6400 SL 10.5 % APR, in September 2015 I asked for a CLI and the card went to $10,500 plus they reduced the APR to 9.5%.

Best thing about this card other than the APR under 10% is that you can give yourself short term "cash flow" loans by just transferring funds from your credit limit to your checking account and then paying it off before the statement cuts - you'll pay a little in interest during the loan float, but its very little - for me usually something like 37 cents for $1000 floated for a couple of days.

I don't think you are going to get a "wow" Venture type credit limit of $20k + from DCU and frankly my current credit limit on my card is in line with most of my other cards but it's plenty for me and the low APR and "instant almost free payday loan" is a great feature IMO.

Re: DCU Credit Card

That's pretty awesome honestly. I don't have a ton of uti issues but that's pretty awesome if anything was to happen. Kind of like discovers cash over feature which I use pretty often. Is that a balance transfer, with a fee? Or is it kind of called something special?

No fee, no cost transfer, just standard APR daily interest - note that while I use this feature all the time, it's usually just over a weekend or for a couple of days before it's paid back. DCU has a policy that you can only transfer in funds through interbank transfers at $2k a pop and with a 3 work day delay. I also "push" funds to DCU through my local bank, but that's limited to $3k a pop and also has a 3 day delay. You can deposit a check for up to $5k through your phone or scanner imaging, but since I don't live in New England, it's kind of a PITA to transfer funds into DCU.

Yes I could make all of my direct deposits (paychecks) to DCU, but I like having a local bank for deposits, etc so they get the DW's check and not mine, but we are using DCU more and more to pay most of our monthly bills. The Visa to checking short term "loan" really helps when I schedule a transfer for say $2000 and I "borrow" $1500 for 3 days - the interest is generally less than the price of a stamp. The key here in keeping the interest cost low is paying in full ASAP, however even if you carryed the "purchase" it's still at your standard APR NOT at a typical higher "cash advance" APR rate.

If you use the feature and not abuse it, it's a real benefit of having a DCU credit union Visa IMO.

Re: DCU Credit Card

I opened a savings account with DCU, then DH financed a truck and we opened joint checking and savings. Shortly thereafter, on MY account I was offered a CC. (presumably using the same pull as when I joined). I got a $10k SL which is middle of the road for me. Not remarkable but handy and good for util. I opted for the low interest one so that if I need to float something when a 0% ends, it won't be too painful.

Pipeguy - Thanks for the info on the CC to checking. I've done that with my Nasa PLOC (basically used it as an overdraft line for a few days because it takes them FOREVER to release a deposit. But hand't thought about it re: DCU. Do you know if they automatically would do it? Or you'd have to be on top of it? (It doesn't matter for me now as my CC is under my membership and our joint checking is under his, but just curious.)

Re: DCU Credit Card

It's just one of the card features - you don't have to set it up:

No Fee or Higher Rate for Cash Advances – Cash advances are free! Get advances 24-hours a day from any ATM displaying the Visa logo or by calling DCU or through Online Banking. Easily transfer money to any of your DCU Checking or Savings accounts or have a check mailed to you. Plus, we offer cash advances up to $200 per day at participating hotels.
