That's exactly how my membership app went. It has been mentioned here that some have had to forward documents and even then were not accepted. For those reasons, I have stated get the membership first.

I'm glad yours went through without a hitch.

Once you get in with them, the process is much more easier.

Re: DCU membership & credit card

Hi all,

New to the forums here - thought I'd post my experience.

I'm a new immigrant to the US, and after some throrough research decided I would open my bank account for payroll with DCU.

I reside in Florida and made a donation to get my membership. (through the website during the application process ($15).

I had to submit proof of address, and employment + SSN electronically. No problem scanned it in, sent it over.

I also applied for the unsecured Credit Card, at the advice of the online chat specialist.

about 3 hours later, I got anxious and followed up by phone, I was advised that my checking account was approved and they are working on opening it as we speak. (AWESOME!)

After that the lady said she would need to transfer me to the loan officer RE: my credit card app for a decision. (At this point I thought for sure it was a denial).

Loan officer answers, asks me to verify my identity, I do..puts me on hold says I am approved with some stipulations..

1. submit pay stub (no problemo)

2. submit copy of SSN (no problemo)

Approved 3k unsecured platinum card! I've only been in the US 3 weeks, and my SSN just got in this past week. Woohoo!

Hope this helps someone in my situation!  (I had gone to BofA / Chase who wouldn't even open a Bank Account for me).

Re: DCU membership & credit card

I got in by virtue of my geographical location ("I live, work, worship or attend school in one of these communities"  see list they provide).

From the membership app, looks like you can join these ways:

"I'm related to a current DCU member".

"I'm an employee, retiree or family member of an employee of a company DCU serves" (see list they provide)

"I'm a member of a membership organzization DCU serves" (see list they provide).

"I will become eligible by becoming a member of Reach Out for Schools" (see costs and details they provide)

or what I picked: "I live, work, worship or attend school in one of these communities"  (see list they provide)

From what I've read in the past and read today about DCU, they're comparable (at least the way I see it) to NFCU - I can't get in with NFCU for their great benefits but DCU seems like a great alternative (generous credit lines and all that).

With this membership, I think I'm done on the banking end.

I got USAA (full member), PENFED (full member), and now DCU...so those 3 alone should open up a lot of other doors down the road for other needed stuff (auto loan? mortgage? lines of credit, etc)...

USAA Rewards VISA (7,500 - 03/2013) / DiscoverIT (6500 - 03/2013) / Cap One Platinum MC (2750 - 03/2013) / Credit One Platinum VISA (750 - 03/2013) / First Premier Bank MC (300 - 02/2013) / FingerHut/WEBBANK (5200.00 - 02/2013) / Victoria's Secret/Comenity (1500 - 03/2013) / PayPal Smart Connect/GECRB (2900 - 03/2013) / Lowe's/GECRB (2800 - 03/2013) / Amazon.com/GECRB (4500 - 03/2013) / Chevron Texaco/GECRB (1950 - 03/2013) / J.C. Penney/GECRB (2150 - 02/2013) / Target (750 - 07/2013) / Abercrombie & Fitch/Comenity (1850 - 07/2013) / CareCredit/GECRB (4500 - 08/2013) / DCU Visa (2000 - 11/2013) / NFCU Sig cashRewards Visa (7000 - 11/2013) - MilitaryStar/Chase (4700 /12/2013)

Also want to add:

Again BIG THANKS TO THIS FORUM and it's generous-with-knowledge-members! At the beginning of this year I was a credit leper and dead in the water credit wise. I've come so far between then and now thanks to all the info and people around here...

So thanks for all of it and: WHEN IN DOUBT, POST. Your info - no matter how small or not valuable as it might seem - COULD HELP SOMEBODY.

Re: DCU membership & credit card

Indeed, I learned alot from these forums, hoping any insight I gain I can pay forward to others.

Now that I have 1 foot securely in the "credit door" I think establishing my credit worthiness will be slightly easier moving forward.

Re: DCU membership & credit card

I do have a couple of questions - don't mean to derail this thread, but perhaps someone can point me in the right direction.

DCU did offer me a car loan as well, which I do need but not right this moment.  Letting the dust settle from my move before I take on any financial obligations.

However I don't want to take too long either, as I understand that it will help "widen" my score overtime.

Having said all of this, any tips on next steps?

Also my wife is not employed, but is looking for work (we came here on L1 visas) I was transfered here by my company -- how can she begin building credit? Is there a strategy I can use to help her?

Thanks in advance!
