If you work the SPG status to Gold ( I think mine is there) or Delta to Medallion Silver at least, then there are CrossOver Rewards between SPG and Delta. When you use either Delta flights or SPG stays, you earn points also in the other program, in addition to the paid for points in the flight or stay.
Good point on the card's potential extinction. I already have Delta/SPG crossover (probably from Corporate Preferred, although now I'm gold for 2016).
