This morning, I checked my e-mail and saw a new Discover card statement. The day had finally arrived---6 months with Discover! It has been a great ride with them.
Anyway, as I always do before leaving for work, I checked all of my accounts. I noticed that my Discover limit has gone up from $7,500 to $8,300! I also saw a new thing right below my new limit......a "Luv" button (for those not in the know, this is the "Request Credit Limit Increase" button ).
So.....buttons are made to be pushed, right?!....I hit it to see whether it would be a soft pull or a hard pull to ask for an additional increase. I filled out income, time at job, time at my address, and on the next screen, filled in $1,700 (which would bring my CL to $10,000), and it told me that it would be a hard pull. There is a "Cancel" button on that page, so I hit that, went back to home, and filled the form out for $1,699. I've read somewhere on here that $10,000 is a required HP. It still told me that a hard pull would be needed again, and so I cancelled.
Hours later, I've just hit the button again. Instead of giving me the data to fill-in screen, it tells me that I already have a request pending! I NEVER authorized an actual limit increase, but it looks as though I'm going to be pulled for one, anyway.
Just a watch-out....don't play with Discover fire, you might get burned. That LUV button is hot! (LOL)
Seriously though, I'm posting this so that you're aware that your interactions with the button, even if you don't follow all the way through and request an actual increase, ARE being recorded!
I'm not upset or anything.....I have no plans to apply for new lines of credit for the next 5 years, and thus I really don't care about the inquiry hit. The only reason that I didn't go through with the CLI request is that I realized that I don't really need the additional credit limit from Discover, and so I was prepared to just wait and be happy with the "natural" credit limit increases issued, should they give me any.
Natural is the way to go with so many things in life
I'm by no means a pro at this, having received almost all of my existing credit just last year. But based on my experience, I would wait for the "natural" CLI that they will likely give you the day of your 6-month anniversary, and then, if you want or need a higher CLI, make the decision about whether it's worth the additional HP. I figure that the smaller the increase that you request of them, the better your chances are of having your request approved!
I'm sorry that I wasn't more clear....the trigger apparently was the e-mail I received this AM that told me that my 6th statement had cut, and that I could go view it now. Not 6 months from account opening.
