Re: Discover, funny stuff.......

Wow !   Yeah, they are conservative, but this seems extreme given that your FICO scores are all ~800....

Yeah, I was kinda thinking the same thing.

I guess any auto CLI is better than nothing. (I don't really feel that way, not in this case with Discover, I'm just saying thatSmiley Very Happy)

I have had my Discover Card for 11 months now, when I apped for the card 5/2011 my EQ FICO was 777-778 IIRC, 1% util, 6 or 7 yrs AAoA's, but I had a bunch of inq's, like 24 in total.

But, the inq's were for "rate shopping" for my auto loan, there was like 12 from 3/2009 all on the same day, and there was 10 from 5/2010 all on the same day, and there were 2 inq's from CC aps that were over 6 months old, so all in all, I technically only had 2 inq's affecting my score and 22 of them were from "rate shopping" and outside a year old.

But when I apped online I guess Discover's computer system did not distinguish that 98% of the inq's were all one the same day, two years apart and were for rate shopping, so I was instantly declined, I was shocked, with a 777 or 778 FICO, 1% util, good AAoA's, I was declined????

So I called Discover right away and spoke to a lady and asked why was I declined? She answered, too many inq's, I asked her to have a manual look at my report and she would see all the inq's were for rate shopping ect...... she put me on hold for a minute or two, came back and said Congratulations, I was able to get you approved with a 2K CL, I was like uh ok, but only 2K?

She responded with Discover is a conservative lender blah blah, so I said fine, thank you.

Fast forward to like three months ago or so, I requested a CLI online and the system came back with "we need a full report to process your request" I cancelled my CLI request, I called Discover and was transferred to the CLI dept, I explained the situation and was told that if the frontline CSR or the online system needed a full report, there was nothing that could be done by Discover to get around this.

So I waited another month, I ran a 1049 charge thru the card and paid the charge in full the day it hard posted to my account, I called Discover back about a week after that and asked for a CLI again as a 2K CL was not sufficient, the CSR asked "do you want me to put in a request for a CLI?" I said sure go ahead, she came back a minute later a said "we need a full report" to process your request, I had finally had enough and told the CSR I wanted to close my account, she pleaded with me to keep it open and when the year mark came around of my account opening to call back and try for a CLI at that time, she went on to tell me what a great cardholder I was, I always PIF, never carried a balance, blah blah blah.

So I said ok, I'll keep the account open until late May, early June and I'll call back like she said and ask for a CLI, she told me that she had noted in her system that I was very unhappy and was going to close the account and in her note she said she also included some type of escalation for my account to be reviewed, I thanked her and hung up.

So yesterday I get a letter in the mail, nothing on the envelope that indicated it was from Discover, I opened the letter and on the top right of the letter it said Discover, so I started reading it and here's what it said word for word......

Dear My Name,

Congratulations! We're pleased to inform you that your outstanding credit management has earned you a credit line increase on your Discover,

The new credit line on your Discover card is $2,250.00 <---Edited

In the coming months we will continue to evaluate your account, Then based on your overall credit behavior and Discover card usage, we may continue increasing your credit line. And the letter goes on, but nothing important after that.

So, Discover finally gave me a CLI, a WHOPPING $250CLISmiley Very Happy

I am so tempted to call Discover and tell them thanks but no thanks, keep your CLI and close my account, it's obvious you need the $$ more than I do!!!

But I think I'll hold the card for another few months, and see what happens.

I just thought I'd post this, as I thought it was pretty hilarious!! (and honestly a bit insulting)

Thanks for reading.

I'm so glad you posted your story. Although Discover is being pin headed about the situation, and might just lose a valued customer, this is a perfect example of what happens when applying under less than optimal conditions. You end up stuck in a bad credit situation. You might actually be better off closing the account, waiting 6 months, and then reapplying. I've heard/read of many success stories here with people and Discover. Someone with no inquiries, 8% UTL, 8 years of AAOA, can get approved for $5000 starting out with 15 months 0% interest.

Someone like me on the other hand, applied for Discover, had a short history and tons of inquiries, and got a $1700 CL that won't grow, with 6 months 3% APR, and 22.99% following the intro period. WHAT A MESS! I learned to garden and not app unless my CR is under excellent circumstances.

Getting approved for a prime card with sub-prime terms and CLs is no fun and I won't do that again! Getting a recon with a prime bank is meant to be just that--a second chance at their product with less than optimal terms!! I don't ever recommend a recon despite the success of most myfico users.

I agree 1000%. My scores are on the low end of good and will probably surpass 700 when I pay off all of my CC debt this year. I have not done any apping in the past 3 years other than my 2 GE cards I got in November. I really want a Discover and an AMEX and I might be able to get both but I don't want to apply right now because I know it will be an uphill battle to get out of a low CL and high APR.

I have 2 MC that have been stuck at the same CL for six years. Even as my credit gets better I am getting no love from either of them and I'm not wasting a HP for a $200 increase. I now have a list of cards that I want and the dates I plan on applying based on my score and what I think my odds will be for a reasonable CL. My first app is not until November 2012 and it is for a Visa from my CU. After I get that, I plan on applying for an Amex in May of 2013 and possibly Discover in November of 2013.

I would rather wait a year for the card I want and get a decent CL and APR then to get it now and try to fight to make it better. I broke my rule for the GECRB cards because I've seen they are generous with CLI and it's been a good move. My Amazon card went from $900 to $1600 in 3 months. I think it pays to really think through the cards you are apping for and the long term effects rather than just saying "I want this card in my wallet."

Re: Discover, funny stuff.......

It's good advice. Wish I would've learned sooner though. Now I'm stuck with a sub-prime Discover with a low CL without the possiblity of a CLI. There is no CLI button online and when I call and select the option to request a CLI along with card replacement - it only lets me request card replacement - no further option for CLI. Crazy and I'm not calling and taking a HP. NO WAY!! I'm stuck in Discover (I shouldn't have applied with a bad CR profile) HELL!!

Re: Discover, funny stuff.......

Stang;

I think you keep your util down so consistently low that Discover might feel you won't use them enough to make a higher CL profitable for them.  You're favorite color might be red, but they can see you almost never dip your toe in it as far as card debt is concerned Smiley Wink

That's a big part of your stellar scores and reports. I really don't think this is a case of Discover being conservative, I think it's a case of them seeing you as too conservative to make them much money with a higher CL than they feel  you'd ever use (they only can spread CLs around so much, so I'm sure they want them going to those they feel will use them, not just pay them back).

[EDIT]:  The one bit of advice I might be able to offer about Discover, might be that if someone intends on applying for it, to run everything they can through their main competitors, mostly Chase or maybe AMEX.  I think they gave me the 6.5k CL they did because of those 2 cards and being able to see Chase was used heavily (AMEX was not, just showed a long history).  Oddly enough, my Chase Freedom is an AU (AMEX is not, I only added an additional card member to it).  Just a thought, from my personal experience with them.
