Discover

Recently I got a call from Discover asking what they can do for me, so I can use my Discover More Student (1500) card as my main card, I told them it was a bad time to call because i'll be late for work, so the woman told me to call them back once I was free. I've had this card for nearly two years now and it's my first card ever and I never got a CLI.

Like three months ago I was approved for a Citi Forward with a 4000 limit and I've started to use that as my main card cause it fits my needs.

Also I recently got an e-mail from AMEX, have the zync for over a year now, to apply for the new blue cash everyday card with a $50 cashback bonus offer.

I don't know what to do really, to be honest, since the forward card is pretty new and I've been using it like crazy, I don't feel like biting on any of these offers.

Re: Discover

I would take the Blue Cash Everyday offer. That one has pretty good rewards at the moment. Or you wait with that card till January in order to maximize backdating.

Discover will probably give you several offers, though maybe not anymore for some time if you now get a new card. It's not a big loss, though, as those offers tend to return. I have had one "spend $500 for 4 months and get $75 bonus" offer and two or three "spend $500 for 3 months and get $75 bonus" so far from Discover this year. I guess I will take one of those offers now, but they seem to be quite persistent. By the way, I never got any CLI  in the three years I have had that card.

Did they just send you notifications of these offers, or did you ask for them?

I got those offers in the mail. I will have to call in order to use one.

I don't get any phone offers from Discover, as I asked them not to call me except in case of an emergency. I didn't like those pushy calls I got in the beginning.

Re: Discover

When Discover calls you back, ask them to upgrade your card.  Try to get away from the student card and to another product they carry.  Since you have Chase and Amex already it should not be a problem for them to do the upgrade.  You do not have to use the new Discover card, but go ahead and get a better product since they are hunting you down.

Also, make sure not to close that account since it is your first line of credit.  It will drop your credit score.  Use the card every 3-6 months and put a small purchase on it and pay it off when you get your statement.  Credit card companies do review accounts now every 6 months and will/can close your account, or drop your avaialalbe credit line for non-usage.

Re: Discover

Okay Im sorta in a pickle now, my macbook pro fell the other day for the umpteenth time and the display broke and is unusable, it lasted me three years, and I've been going back and forth in my head cause school is about to start again and I've written all my papers on that laptop, so I'm stuck on what to do and what will the best decision.

Though, the best decision I think for me is to wait and save some extra money and buy a new latop in a few months after I pay off my Citi Forward, owe like 1,300, bought a bike, an xbox 360, and used it to go out for different occasions during the summer, I don't have the cash really for a new laptop, well I should say a new macbook. I prefer macs when it comes to laptops and pcs win hands down for desktops for me.

I keep getting more offers now, too. Just the other day I got an offer for the new BankAmericard Cash Rewards for being a "valued customer" via mail, I checked my online account with them and clicked my special offers link and see something about $100 cash back bonus on the first $500 you spend within 90 days and 10% customer bonus when you deposit your rewards into a BOA account. I also got a few offers for a Chase Slate recently through the mail, but threw those away isntantly. lol

The only difference I see between the Amex Blue Everday offer, which ends tomorrow for me, is that the Amex also has a 2% department stores cashback. But, I'll be getting $50 more in cashback rewards instantly from the BOA card. On the other hand I hear Barclay is somewhat easy and generous to get if you're buying from the apple store, is that true?

I feel like banging my head against the wall here, so tempted.

Re: Discover

If I were in this situation I'd probably be upfront with Discover and tell them about all of my other offers and higher credit limits and see if they'd try to match them. Smiley Very Happy

They don't necessarily have to match the other credit lines dollar for dollar but they'd have to show me some kind of love in order for it to be reciprocated.

Re: Discover

Oh man, you're giving me more ideas to think about, too now? Lol But, I did give them a new customer pratically, after I told my girlfriend to apply for Discover last night and she said she was approved for $750 and will receive the card once she mails-in some info. Also i'm a savings account customer of theirs, which they recently brought down the interest rate of.

My head feels like it's about to explode from all this thinking. lol
