The score is not counting that much for Discover but rather your credit behaviour. My score at application was 793 EQ Fico and now it is up at 785 again. I have seen members with thin profiles getting very high starting limits but they did not have tons of new accounts .. In my eyes Discover is a very responsible lender which is not willing to take extreme risks.... I mean look at my Amex and still approved with my recent behaviour. This was a big surprise to me and not expected. Can't blame Discover for not doing the same. Also why do you need 20K limit to run 4K through the card? I can run 4K through my Discover but just need to pay down during the billing cycle. The only time I could not use it was to purchase airfare because the amount was over 2,5K but I have run over the 2,5K a few times for travel expenses. Not so convenient but it is possible.
Edit: if I had to approve myself I would give me 5K limits ..LOL

Expecting a $20k increase from Discover (one of the most conservative lenders) is a bit much. Heck they almost doubled your existing CL, that, in of itself is quite an accomplishment!
+1
You went in with an unrealistic expectation, given Discover's well-documented pattern of conservative CLIs. Discover is a great card for the long haul, but it's not the card to go to for big, flashy CLI progress.

No they don't.
If you don't need them, by all means close the card if you feel that's the right decision for you. Discover, using its own valid standards, needs customers that are content with slower growth over a longer term and tend to use their card fairly heavily. Shrug. To each his or her or its own.

I'm losing my patience with Discover. I got the it card 3 months ago with an initial CL of $4,000. Today I called for a CLI of $24,000 and was only bumped to $9,000 with a HARD PULL.
The rep said that I didn't use the card much and that I only have 1 or 2 cards (clearly have 3 with 40k, 20K and 15k limits reporting) with limits over 10K. The weird part is that she said I'm not carrying over 10k debt on those cards either.
It's frustrating when you try to use your cards wisely and not rack up debt but you get dinged for it. Where do I go from here? I really want $20k for cushion.
I’m not like Discover right now for being so stingy. I was really looking forward to a 5 digit line with them.
How did you get $40,000 on a Home Depot Card and how?
@GaTech wrote:
Well, seeing as you're ONLY $1000 from having a 5digit CL with them, I wouldn't pout too much.
Why don't you take the rep's advice and charge about $9,000 in 1 year and see if they give you autoluv.
Right...Im stuck at 1000.00
My year is coming up, so we will see what is up. I wasnt going to trip even though my other cards are more than this, because I dont spend THAT much at any time in a month...but I got close to it more than once...a 1000.00 is really nothing at all. Had to keep on checking my balance to make sure that my payments went through because i wanted to use my Discover card on vacation when my AMEX was used for my rental car.

I get that every lender is different but why should I budge first!? I'm the consumer. They need me more than I need them.
They've decided for now they would rather have you at a 9k limit.
You do come off a bit enititled and bratty. No offense

OP,
While I understand that you may feel disrespected in some way, please don't take it personally. Discover is a great company with excellent customer service, but they are known for being fairly conservative. To echo what everyone else here has already said, if you want to get that limit up there then you need to start running a lot more money through the card. I started with them about 18 months ago with a $3000 limit, and now I'm up to $15,000. I ran a lot of money through that card, and I periodically carried a balance. I also incurred a HP once, but it has been worth it for me as they just auto increased my limit from $10,000 --> $15,000.
Don't do anything impulsively (such as closing the card) when you are upset - $9,000 is not a bad limit for them and it certainly has the potential to grow if you use it often.
