Do 1st purchases really matter?

I have read that Amex cares about the first transactions and will do a CLD if not meeting their standards.

Does Discover do that?

Any others that do it, or are suspected of doing it?

Re: Do 1st purchases really matter?

Ha! I was having a conversation with my boys about what my first purchase will be once I get my first card post-bk. I've been teaching them what I've learned on myfico and about how I'm going to make very small purchases and pay it off right away, so they voted that my first purchase would be Slurpees at 7-11. I wonder what the nosey ccc's would make of that.Smiley Very Happy

I have significant doubts that even Amex does this; where did you read this?

AFAIK while one's transactions are evaluated as part of one's customer record, it's not a knee-jerk reaction.  If anything, I suspect the presumed CLD after first transaction probably was triggered on a fraud alert, or something else which would've been flagged regardless of first, second, or ten thousandth traction.

Re: Do 1st purchases really matter?

I've never heard of that, but seriously, why would you tolerate such petulance from a lender?

I make the first purchase wherever I want to and for whatever amount I feel like. I have never thought of this as a concern when making a first purchase.

I've read posts about it on this board and "the other board" but never knew if it was speculation or had some factual basis behind it.

I think it's speculation, I likely missed the posts on either forum, but with all the pushing the edge of the envelope credit-behavior in both places, I strongly suspect it'd be well known if Amex did indeed do this... and I'd also state with said behavior, that incidences of AA including CLD's for forum members are much higher than the average consumer, and as a result I suspect it's being a different issue rather than first transaction itself being a problem.

Out of curiosity, what did they say their transaction was?

Re: Do 1st purchases really matter?

Hi,

I don't know about 1st purchases but I have a question for you .... did you clear ALL of your collections before getting the Discover card? I'm going through removing some items and wondering what to expect when I apply for a Discover card.

Congrats on the 703 !

All 3 of my reports are collection free.  I was waiting on EQ to catch up on deleting the last 2 before I app'd.    FYI Discover pulled TU for me.   And thanks, I was shocked when I saw the score!

I want to say it was avoid 7-11 type stores, Wal Mart and discount stores?  OH and internet porn.  Yeah I'm not worried about that one LOL

We'll, I'll see when my second statement drops and I ask for the usual CLI; I buy snacks at 7-11 2ish times a week at work, to date it hasn't been a problem, seems like it'll be a fairly easy test.

Also my first transaction on my Zync was a recurring online gaming charge of all things: they called to see if it was fraudulent, but after I verified hasn't been an issue since. Granted I use my Amex cards for the majority of my spending and that includes higher-end transactions too, but I really don't think Amex cares all that much.  If it were a prestiege thing, they'd just close the account rather than CLD.  Doesn't make much sense really unless there was an additional rationale behind it at least in the first two cases.  YMMV on the most popular Internet media. Smiley Happy
