FYI Walmart Discover: can't charge more than credit limit

Credit Limit = 500. Card balance including pending charges = 100.

Want to make 600 purchase.

Go into Walmart and pay 300 on card.

Attempt to charge 600. Declined.

Ended up charging on AMEX.

Called number on back of Walmart Discover card. Learned that you can only charge up to the credit limit in a single transaction. Even if you have a $1,000,000 credit balance, you can only charge up to your credit limit.

I didn't know that but now I do.

I don't understand your post. If you have a credit card with a credit limit then yes you would only be able to charge up to your available credit limit and all purchases after or more than your available credit line would be declined unless they allow you to opt in to over the limit usually for a fee everytime you go over.

Please clarify your post if you can.

Re: FYI Walmart Discover: can't charge more than credit limit

To clarify.

The credit limit is 500. I wanted to make a 600 purchase.

The current balance on the card is 100. So I went into Walmart and made a 300 payment, making the current balance -200.

I figured if I charge 600, the current balance will be 400, still less than the 500 credit limit. But that isn't how it works.

According to Walmart Discover, it doesn't matter how much credit balance I have on the card, the maximum charge I can make is 500.

Is that clear?

Re: FYI Walmart Discover: can't charge more than credit limit

Why would you buy something worth $600 with Walmart card except American Express ????

Maybe some electronic with 0% APR for 24 months ??

Re: FYI Walmart Discover: can't charge more than credit limit

[ Edited ]

Ur post is a bit confusing.

Are u saying that u overpaid ur credit card and wanted to use the negative balance on ur account to pay for something that is over ur line of credit??

As in -- You put $300 on ur credit card that only had a $100 balance. And that resulted in a  200$ overpayment on ur account. And u're trying to use the full amount, as in $200 credit balance PLUS $500 credit limit.

Clarified, for the most part, above. Thanks!! Smiley Happy

After payment posts you still wont be able to charge more than your available credit, unless Walmart Discover has an opt in for over the limit charges, this is how credit cards work that are not a Visa Sig or World Mastercard.

The 600 purchase was NOT made at Walmart. It was for a car repair.

Re: FYI Walmart Discover: can't charge more than credit limit

Most cards I have will say the available credit is the limit, plus the over payment. I have never tried to make a purchase more than the limi by doing this, though. FIA never says you have more credit than the limit; neither does Citi.

I guess the confusing part is what is available credit. Apparently, the max available credit is the credit line amount. Any credit balance, even if it's a million bucks, doesn't matter.

available credit is what's left after charges. If you login to your account it will show you the available credit left for purchases.
