I've seen the cash/credit thing in parts of NJ and PA. BP loves doing it. However, it is predominantly in CA.
I've always wondered if any of those cash sales at gas stations ever get declared as income...or if the owners just pocket the money.
The cash/credit difference per gallon has been going on for over 20 years. It just depends on where and which stations as well as when. The reason for the cash price break is the percentage the station owners have to pay to the credit card companies when you use your CC. Actually the cash price is considered a discount given to you by the station owners. Some stations eat this percentage for more business... some pass along the % to all customers in their "same price per gallon cash or credit" ads.

How much is the difference though?
Usually 10 cents or less. However, I have definitely seen much higher.
Here in Maryland it can be as much as 20 cents a gallon.
I buy my gas at BJ’s with my BJ’s MC. Gas is generally cheaper there, plus I save $0.10 per gallon by using their card.

Something I've wondered with the BJs MC, is that 10 cent savings off the member or non-member price?

In my area, only members can buy gas at their stations. So I guess that would be 10 cents off the member price. The BJ's MC gives a discount off the BJ's membership fee. I have been a longtime BJ's shopper, so their card makes a lot of sense for me. Right now they're running a special - 15 cents off each gallon if you buy something in the store first.
