In another post I started some time back I was asking what everyones' "checking spending ability" was on their Amex card. I was doing great. I was increasing my asking amount by 1k each week. I got as high as 28k. Well this morning I thought I would try my weekly attempt just for kicks, and tried for 29k, and was denied. I got smacked all the way down to my "approved" credit limit of 20k. Now I need to start all over again. Kinda makes you feel a little humble getting a verbal smack down once and a while.
Are you actually spending anything like $20k in a month on the card?
I hate to say this but I do not think this spend check button is for "playing around purposes" ...it should be used if you really need to buy something for this amount.

Don't be such a Debbie Downer. I think many people here play with it when they get bored. Myself included.

I think your internal score with Amex has changed. Is there any change in your credit report lately?

😀 ..at least we are all old enough to live the consequences for our actions !
I just dont want to read a new thread in a week saying "I hate amex, they froze my accounts and are FR'ing me for no reason!!!!! wahhhhh, wahhhhhhhhhhh"
That is all
you actually have to use your line to keep it, let alone having it increased. amex platinum increased my spending limit from 75k to 100k only after i ran up 57k in charges back in february.... and paid it back in full.

That doesn't mean you're "starting over". When you go over whatever internal threshold they have for you, it defaults back to the actual credit line. For example, when my limit was $2K I got it to approve all the way up to $4K. Tried $5K, and got the same message as you. Next week, tried $4K again and it was approved again.
Hard to imagine this was without reason. No one should use that tool as a boredom reliever (as I remember another poster referenced it too).
There has been a post that someone was put under Financial Review the day after playing with it, and I doubt it was a coincidence. It's hard to believe AMEX would laugh off someone repeatedly seeing how much they can swipe at once.
