I worked with low limit cards ($500) for about six months before being approved for an Amex charge (NPSL) and a Chase Slate ($1000).  After about six months with Chase I was approved for a CSP ($6000).  I attribute my management of the Slate with that accomplishment.  I'd recommend getting a basic card from a prime bank (Chase, Citi, Amex) and building a relationship with them.  Discover may be a good bet as well
