Help re: closed credit card!

Hi All,

I recently received a Hooters card with awful terms (low CL, AF, high APR).  Merrick refused to waive the AF so I never activated the card and in fact told them I declined the card.

When I updated my CR today, I saw that Hooters/Merrick is reporting and that is has the $36 AF reported as the balance owed!  I wasn't aware that cards would report without being activated (still a credit novice).  Do I have to pay this or can I call back to Hooters and have this taken care of?

Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Do I have to pay the $36 AF that's reported as a balance on my CR or was it wiped out when I cancelled the card without activation?

some places yes, some will waive. call and see, then make sure you get thier info and watch the statement very closely. if it says you owe, pay the min and fight it out. don't give them any reason to ding you.

Re: Help re: closed credit card!

no you must pay $36 AF , if you don't pay it should be mark late 30 , 60 ............ untill you pay that money . because when you applied cc you already agree to pay . after you pay close or open up to u . I been there last year on capital one . They report I been late more than 60 day , I really don't know I have capital one , because my wife she applied for  me and I don't know , when I see the card and I activate .It already report 2 month . it mark late because I don't pay AF . After I check my CR I depute all CRAs it took 3 month to remove it . not easy .

Re: Help re: closed credit card!

merrick is tough.  i've been with them for 4 years--give me good increases but will not lower astronomical interest.  it's card you have to pif. pay the fee use card and then cancel when fee comes due.
a lot of people have had major problems with them posting late.   i never have but i pay 2 days early online banking so i have third party involved.
also do not ever be late or interest will zoom.!!!!!  pay as i said above.

Agree, grin and bear it for 11 months, and then if they don't waive it, dump it. It's not worth screwing up your credit for one $36 fee. And you might as well use it in the meantime to get some benefit for your scores. (Don't let them win the whole game!)

I was wondering if and when the other shoe would drop with Hooters cards. They seemed like such a good deal when everyone was getting them.

Re: Help re: closed credit card!

my dh got a call from Wells Fargo telling him he was approved for a cc with cl 3000 and high interest rate.  dh told them no thanks dont want it.  they sent it anyway.  he never activated and shredded the card.  but its showing as open on his cr it helps his util but hurts because of new credit. what do you suggest?

Re: Help re: closed credit card!

Seems like I read about the identical thing happening, Wells Fargo also, about three months ago.

I don't remember ever hearing back what happened, but I think I posted that since these places are supposed to be taping their calls, that he should call them back, go straight to a supe, and tell them to listen to the tapes, that he specifically turned down the card, that they presumably pulled his credit report without his permission (which is a $1K violation right there), and that he wants the card and the inq stricken from his records PDQ.

And of course, it will have to be him that calls. If you live in a state where it's legal to tape calls, you might even want to buy one of those gadgets and tape the call yourself. Good luck!
