Almost impossible unless you're one of the 1%ers. Discover is rediculous
I've only had my discover 4 months, but I was hoping to get a sp cli over the auto phone thingy. No dice. It's not even an option for me.
I'm trying the relationship method, so far no luck. But I haven't given up yet! Patience is key.

Your score increases significantly.
After seven months you ask for a CLI. They HP you.
They give you $500.
You sock drawer the card forever.
Well, $1200 starting limit... use heavily... pay off/pay down to under 10% regularly.... 8 months and NO CLI!!! They won't budge on me! My DTI ratio is under 20% including my mortgage, and I carry VERY low balances on ALL my cards. My highest CL is $10,000 on another card and my two Cap1 cards have over doubled my CLs in 6-12 months... yet Discover won't move!!! Been denied twice for CLI!!
I'll be approaching 6 months here in December. Up til now, I've had <5% utilization and all but one month I paid before statement cut.
But this time I'm changing things up. I have $1,500 charged on it and I'm only going to make a negligible payment of like $300 (since I have 0% intro). I've heard Discover likes (or at least doesn't mind balances), so we'll see if this changes anything.
My utilization is going to take a hit, but I don't plan on apping for anything else anytime soon. If anything, this'll ensure that I stay in the garden! I'm determined to get that elusive CLI.
I just got one today, though it was a TU HP to 1000.
I think one of the things that was really different about this time is that I had a 0 balance on the card and some of my newer CC accounts have reached the 6 month mark and that I had an actual human being look at my CR instead of having the computer try to decide for them. All the other times I had tried to request one, I had some kind of balance on the card (usually around 130-150 dollars) since I had that 0 intro APR offer and it was always a SP on TU and also the fact that my account was still kinda relatively new to them which is what I was getting denied for a lot of the time by the system. Considering that I couldn't get anything at all from Discover, I'm actually kinda okay with what they gave me considering that I have a lot of credit already that I haven't gotten anywhere close to using that much of relatively.
I think what Discover (in my case) really likes is regular usage and low balances at the time of applying for a CLI though I've commonly heard that sometimes they give CLIs to people who have balances on their card. I also think that they kinda want to be the mainstay in your wallet so if you have plenty of other cards with other lenders that they're not gonna be as generous in contrast to someone who just has like one or two other cards or something. I also do have a Discover checking account but I really don't think that had too much to do with it.
If they start you out with a nice limit, you are likely to get decent increases along with your credit picture staying static (No negative changes.)
