I personally do not have any experience with that. I've checked that pre-qualifer site so many times and no dice. And my EX FICO is 675, plenty good enough for a charge card. Oh well they wont here a peep from me til 2013 anyway

I didn't see anything with the word 'approved' on the "View All Cards" page. Has the site been redesigned since then?

I don't think the Amex site is a SP, I think it checks to see if you're on their mailing list (and maybe puts you into some kind of "lurker" SP pool that they check every few months). I saw Amex SPs every few months on my Ex report, but not correlating to when I used their pre-approval site. It also only ever showed me pre-approvals for Gold and Delta Gold, which are the only two cards I've ever received mailings from them about (it did say "you might also be interested in Blue Sky", but that's only because Amex knows nobody is interested in Blue Sky).
