I like to have a Visa/MC and Amex. I can do without Discover. I've been to a couple places that, surprisingly, only took Amex. Then again, I've been to a gas station that wouldn't take Amex. I also prefer different banks as well. You never know what's going to happen to a relationship you may have with one particular bank - from either your end or theirs.
