How many cards give HHonors Gold Status?

The AMEX upgrade to Gold as long as you're a card holder happened a couple months ago I believe.  I wouldn't be surprised if it remains this way as long as Citi has it too.  I've been tempted to try to upgrade mine but I've heard you can only do it after a year of having the base version

Amex changed the policy on the Surpass in November.  Now it's Gold for the life of the account.

I think AMEX may have changed their T&C's on the card.  It used to be 1 year only gold then after it was tied to spending.

Here are the T&C's they have listed:

• 12pts (6%) on Hilton
• 6pts (3%) on restaurants, gas and groceries
• 3pts (1.5%) elsewhere
• Signup bonus: 60,000 Hilton HHonors Points
• Automatic Silver status
• Gold status for first year and every year you spend $20k+
• Priority Pass standard airport lounge access (pay a discounted $27/visit)

Hilton or their partners does promos from time to time where one can get gold status for free or for a small amount of money.

For instance, visa infinite cardholders were eligible for free Hilton gold status during the summer. Its easy to generate any random visa infinite card number using a generator as well.

A couple months ago there was a promo for $10 for 1 year Hilton gold plus some other stuff coupled in it as well. Can't remember the specifics.

If you don't want to grab a card just for this, then wait for the promo. They seem to be pretty fairly common.

Yes BUT the caveat to this is that it is only good till the end of 2014, meaning not a permanent Platinum perk, after 2014 then what?

I'd prefer not to do another annual fee card if I"m not getting a lot of value out of it. I probably should look at the SPG then...

I'm going to consider it, but I don't know if I stay in hilton enough to get the value.  This may be a churnable card for me.
