No annual fees on either so having both doesn't cost anything.
Freedom Unlimited has the $150 sign up bonus which is easy to attain. Discover It has double cashback the first year, IIRC.

Just wondering how often does the calendar categories overlap? is there a point to having both of these cards together? I understand if someone spends more than the $1500 cap on one of the cards and can use the other if they're in the same rotating category quarter, but if someone doesn't. Is this combo useless?
I've had both cards for two years...and it seems there has been at least one quarter each year that has some match. Even if they match on something, one may offer a second category that the other does not.
I don't consider it a useless combo, unless you never plan to use one card or the other

It seems to be a quarter or two each year. Often, on first quarter gas.
No, this combo is not useless. In fact, I'm of the belief that for cash back seekers (as opposed to travel rewards seekers), these are the two cards that people should get first. The pair is just awesome. Having both means that, in most quarters, you will have a useful 5% category. Why not double up on your chances of a useful 5% category?
These two cards and a good 2% card can get someone a really nice system for cash back. And with the Discover cash back match year, there's no real need for the 2%er for the first year.
I personally think they are both nice to have even if I have to rotate usage.
They both seem to grow nicely as well so I added both to my lineup.
Looks like restaurants and dining are overlapping for both cards this summer.
