How soon to close?

I recently got approved for 3 cards back to back:-

  • Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Visa Signature Card - Limit 8K (Got 10 day message but got approved by calling Chase backdoor)
  • AMEX Blue Cash Everyday - 1K (Got approved when contacted AMEX customer service)
  • AMEX SPG - 2K (This was the last one to get approved, got approved instantly on website)

I think I am not going to use BCE very much since I already have a Costco AMEX card with limit of 10K. Is it okay to close BCE? How much open unused credit cards going to hurt your score?

My current Experian VantageScore is 683. AAoA is 8 months.

Experian Score: 716 (as of Jun-2013)

AMEX Costco TrueEarnings (10K) | Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Visa Signature (5K) | Alaska Airlines Visa Signature (5k) | AMEX Starwood Preferred Guest (2K) | US Alliance Visa Classic (5K) | AMEX Blue Cash Everyday (1000) | Capital One Platinum Mastercard (500) | Chase British Airways (5K) | Chase Southwest Premier (3K) | Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve (5K)

Re: How soon to close?

An open unused card doesn't hurt your score but closing a unused card can hurt your score over time due to various factors such as being re-grouped from loss of credit mix. If you keep the unused card open, you need to make a charge every 6-12 months for it to not be closed due to inactivity.

Re: How soon to close?

I personally wouldn't close a high-level rewards card that doesn't have an AF, such as the BCE. The reports of frequent Amex CLIs, the rewards categories, the purchase protection, the spending bonus, and the positive tradeline are all well worth keeping this card open. Spend the $1,000 to get $100 cash back, then just keep the card open for emergencies or whatever. It doesn't cost you anything, and is a highly coveted card for most people.

In My Wallet: Amex BCP (12/12) $50,000, Chase Freedom (12/12) $16,500, Cap1 Quicksilver (6/12) $14,000, Barclaycard Rewards (5/13) $10,500, Citi Prestige (4/16) $30,000

Spend the $1,000 to get $100 cash back

Does BCE still have bonus cash back of $100 when you spend $1000?

Re: How soon to close?

As far as I am aware. When did you apply for yours?

If your account doesn't have that promotion, I would call up and ask them to put it on there since creditcards.com was running a $150 bonus for the BCE and a $250 for the BCP just a few days ago. I'm too lazy to go check if it is still there.

In My Wallet: Amex BCP (12/12) $50,000, Chase Freedom (12/12) $16,500, Cap1 Quicksilver (6/12) $14,000, Barclaycard Rewards (5/13) $10,500, Citi Prestige (4/16) $30,000

Re: How soon to close?

To qualify for SPG bonus there is a spending threshold of $5000 in 6 months. $1000 spending threshold each on BCE and Marriott Rewards cards in 3 months.
