just careful not sure about freedom or discover but a lot of companies consider convience checks as a cash advance and additional fees will apply, usually immediately. I used Navy Federal Platinum Visa because they do not charge additional fees and treat it like a normal process. but that's rare but it's military banking =)
and balance transfers usually only applies to credit cards afaik
