I want to cold app for Chase or Citi.  However, I have always heard that one collection (which is exactly what I have) will cause a denial.

i have one collection, a 90 day late and two charge-offs, and am pre-approved on citi and chase

Get the f____ out of here!  You see, it all does not make sense!  I wonder what is keeping me from getting pre-approved!!  I have no charge-offs, a late pay in 2014, and my scores are just above 670.  I know my utilization is high at 50% but even when it was lower I didn't pre-qualify.

i know its crazy i was shocked when they popped up a week ago.  All the negatives are from early 2013, so theyre almost four years old and perfect history since then, but i was still amazed that im pre-approved.  im gonna app for freedom on feb 1

I received a pre-qual from CSP and Chase Slate in November.  I waited about two weeks, researched, and app'd for the CSP (and was approved). I would definitely check their pre-qual tools on the website. Citi still won't show me any love Smiley Happy

I have on more than one occasion either received an invitation to apply or an offer from the pre-qual website from American Express and Capital One.  However, never in my life have I received anything from Chase nor Citi by mail or through their pre-qual websites. How about you?

I can count on one hand the numbe of preapprovals I've had from large banks, and they've all been online:

Capital One - Preappoved for a Platinum MasterCard back in 2014. Took the offer. Never preapproved for anything again.

Amex - Preapproved for the Green card back in 2014. Denied because a false collection was added to my report between SP for preapproval and the app. Never preapproved for anything again.

Chase - Preapproved for Slate and Freedom back in 2015. Took the offer and got Freedom. Never preapproved for anything again.

Never had a preapproval or mailer from Citi, Discover, Barclays, Comenity majors, Synchrony majors, etc.

Re: I never rec pre-qual from Chase nor Citi

I have 2 Citi cards and have never had anything in prequals anywhere, even when my reports weren't frozen. My first Citi card (the DC) was from a mailer, but it wasn't a pre-approval.

But I'm loved by those subprime lenders! I'm prequalified for CreditOne, Blaze Mastercard, Merrick Visa, and tons of payday loans from predatory lenders.

Re: I never rec pre-qual from Chase nor Citi

Citi I think has a cut off to market around  680.  Where they get their list is a guess.  I got dozens of Citi DC offers for ever before I took one.  Now I get Citi Diamond Offers.  My wife who has higher scores and limits never has has gotten the first one.

I know Amex gets theirs from Experian.  I think Barclays get theirs from Transunion and Discover get theirs from Equifax. However, I can't figure out Chase and Citi.

Re: I never rec pre-qual from Chase nor Citi

I received about 5 offers from Citi for a few months last year, none of which I took. I cold app'd for the TYPremier. The prequals disappeared after approval. As for Chase, I prequalified for CSP and Freedom back in 2015. I applied for both and havent received a prequal from Chase since. But a few weeks ago I was getting solid offers from Chase for several cards based on my relationship with them, not through prequal. All of those have since disappeared.
