Hmm, well that's interesting.

Quite! They had the same sale early in the summer, 35% off the usual 3.5 cents when you buy 5,000 or more. Even at the default price, I would make out well with redemptions, but I'm having an internal debate about whether I'm rewarding myself and family with great travel just for spending as we always do, or if I'm just buying discounted travel.
Back to original posters question: I would look around a lot because a lot of dates and hotels star points are not accepted and they can be accepted for a date and then removed. I don't think their value is close to what people says as they have such limited redemption.

I haven't had that experience at all, but using Starpoints for Starwood stays appears to give me "meh value." Personally I find Marriott redemptions lately to be giving me more than 7cpp on Starpoints, with no issues on availability (Times Square for New Years weekend and Champs-Élysées in April were my last two redemptions - not sure when demand could be any higher). Transfers to airline partners can also be quite fruitful.
The SPG-to-Marriott transfers are what make the SPG points worth it to me; probably wouldn't have touched the cards otherwise. Because yes the offerings of the SPG properties with how much are needed to redeem are blah indeed. And I think I'm gonna purchase them if only because at minimum it's discounted travel as K said and nothing is wrong with that in my book. Plus, you earn more points since it counts towards point earnings which I thought they would prohibit tbh.
I am really thinking about spending the $682.50 for 30,000 Starpoints... Probably going to do this for 92,047 Marriott points as soon as my SPG statement closes on Friday.

I likely will. My last few airline redemptions have been pretty good, so that's a low threshold for me even without an extra 25%.

Nice heads up btw. Where did you hear about this?

I don't think I have ever spent that much to buy points, but I have bought points for nominal amounts to top off accounts and it can make a lot of sense in the right circumstances when there is no other way to reach the point balance needed for redemption. My feeling is its better to spend a reasonable amount for an excellent point redemption than to try to save a little money and take a really subpar redemption.
