Which would it be?
I'd recommend either CSP or Freedom (despite not having either)

Huh? Missing something or what is so great about this card..
Off the top of my head, Sallie Mae MC.
The question needs clarification, though. Before recommending anything, I'd need to know a lot more about the person's needs. Everyday purchases? Travel? Single person? Family? Business? Personal? Credit score range?
Probably might possibly be the SM as everyone needs Groceries and Gas for the most part and it is a no AF CC and none of the rotating categories.. All year around and of course Amazon.. Great all around card.. Other then that it would be the QS or DC or Fidelity Amex 1.5 or 2% respectively.
Quicksilver

And why the CSP as a general recommendation? I know a lot of people here love it, but if you're talking about making a recommendation to a credit newbie who might only be getting one card, the CSP would be way out in left field. It has an AF. It's not great for everyday expenses. It's not easy for a newbie to get.
Come on, OP, we need some clarity about why you're looking for a one and only card to recommend.
When I hear recommend one and only one card, what I hear is:
Most widely accepted (Visa or MC).
No AF.
No worry over categories.
Good cash back.
Which means: Citi Double Cash.
