Apart from the Centurion, Palladium and all those glits and glam. What are some invitation only credit cards you know of? I remember someone saying to open a checking account so one can receive an invite for a credit card.

Does a latest (Last Week) Merrick Bank preapproval count? It's said that some of those are by invitation and one landed in my mailbox for 700 with a (guarantee) double-the-limit after XXX months down the line. No annual fee, no monthly fee, free FICO Bankcard etc.

Merrick certainly counts as a "invitiation only" CC that is "not necessarily prestigious," to put it mildly.
Anyone happen to know why they got an invite? Did you have a savings account with them first?
