Re: Is AMEX ever going to make a student card?

The Optima was marketed toward students back in '99...that's how I got in.  Anyway, I thought my $500 CL was too low and cancelled my card.

Ever is a loooong time, we can't tell the future and most of us aren't privvy to AmEx's internal decision making.  I don't think anyone can definitively answer either way.

They have certainly branched out a bit from their origins with Zync (though no longer available), Optima and prepaid.  It's a possibility but, as others have said, students apply for and get AmEx cards already.  I got a Gold while I was in college.

Amex use to have student cards and I think they decided to not advertise towards that market but certainly MANY students get amex... I actually don't like student cards because with many banks they lock you into some reward, some interest, some max credit line and not all are simple to graduate out of student card when in most cases if you work on your credit you can  skip the student card... the only thing it allows you to do is put income at like $8k vs. maybe $12 or $15k... look at the apps for min. income and figure it out.

Completely agree. I had a wells fargo student card that was stuck at a limit of $1900 (AFTER 3 CLIs), while I was getting instant approvals from big issues fo $9k+ credit lines. Really frustrating. Plus, since it was one of my first cards, I couldn't just cancel it.

AMEX SPG - $8k
Citi AA Visa - $6.5k
Walmart Discover - $5.5k
Citi Forward - $3.9k
Discover More - $2.5k
Wells Fargo Cash Back - $1.9k

To each their own, but I can't think of many reasons why a 2nd year in college would need to have a Platinum Amex card. It's really only useful for the perks associated with traveling often, other than that the rewards aren't any better than the green card.
