To answer the question, in my opinion it's absolutely not a good idea. (I don't think that you want to hear this, but it certainly doesn't matter because you asked.)
Considering all you want is the WEMC. If that's the only trait you'd like from the card and not actually the 2.2% cash back, then I'd just suggest trying for a different WEMC from another lender than Barclays.
In the end, all you've done really is make certain that you won't have an Arrival card at all now.
(And for the record... I'm not trying to be rude, at all. Sometimes, the objective info comes across as crass or blunt, but I assure you that I'm simply stating the facts.)
I would not have closed it, Agree that I hate Barclays policy handing out this WEMC like crazy to new applicants and the treatement of existing customers with denials for WEMC . But I would never close mine for that reason as other than the nice silver shiny look there is really nothing I would miss with my WMC Arrival+ ....benefits are pretty much the same at least for the ones I use. Just really hate the attitude towards existing customers !
