I received a call from a customer service representative at BoA. First she verified my name, then went into a sales spiel about protection insurance for being unemployed, and that if I enrolled I would get a free copy of my credit report. I told her I don't have a BoA credit card. She then said, "Is this (my name), with a phone number of XXX-XXX-XXXX?" I said, yes. So then she says, "The last four of your social is XXXX and your address is XXXX?" I told her that both of those were wrong and she had the wrong me.
She then argued with me about it and said that I must have an account I don't remember. I told her that was not likely, and that I have a very common name...my phone number is listed in the phone book, that someone had the wrong info. She then tried to give me the customer service number, saying I needed to call them and give them my social and address to verify that I don't have an account. I told her that I know for a fact I don't have an account, and that I've seen all my credit reports as of yesterday, none listed for BoA...no mistake. She kept saying, "well if it were me, I'd take down the number and call. I'd want to know if I had credit out there somewhere." I thanked her for her concern and then hung up.
Is this some kind of a scam? Or has BoA really lost their minds?
It's easy to get your name and phone number, so a caller having those pieces of information doesn't 'prove' anything. Ignore the call (and never say 'yes' to any question on a sales call.... that can be recorded and used to 'prove' you agreed to something...).
If you're really worried about the existence of an account, it's easy to go to BOAs website and look up their 800 number (don't use the phone number given to you in the call). You can get transfered to an account specialist, if you think there might be a wayward account in your name. However, any accounts would be on your credit report...
As an aside, I never answer my home phone if I don't recognize the number (gotta love caller id). And if it's important, they can leave a message.
Not sure about your call , But them Flipping idiots call me atleast 3 times a week to sell me that insurance or some other type of insurance.
If they had the wrong SSN and address. Its probally just wrong info on thier part. Either way i would disregard it and not bother , Since you dont see anything on your reports.
1) Banks do not make sales calls to non customers (they may send you mailers from time to time)
2) Why would she need to verify your identity if you were a customer?
3) She asked you to call a 800 number and give your social - HUGE red flag
Banks will NEVER call and ask for you to verify your personal and confidential information.
You don't have a BofA credit card. Someone called you and said you did.
You need to call 800-432-1000 and get to the bottom of this ASAP:
They are all bad. I don't think you can ignore this one. The number above is an official BofA telephone number.
I called the number listed above. After eight minutes of teleprompts asking me for my account number (LOL), I finally spoke with a representative. She said that they would never call and ask that I call another number and provide my social, which we all know is a fact.
She ran me through the system and said her system does not show me as a current or former customer...but asked if I'd like to apply! I thanked her and nicely declined.
