Welcome to the Kroger family!
I'm glad you got your shopper's card and that
everything went well for you.
It's not that Kroger jacks up their prices compared
to WalMart. WalMart has lower prices because they
have more buying power.
Kroger uses the gas price discount as an incentive to get
shoppers to spend more money in the store. You're getting back
at the pump a portion of the money you spent buying groceries.
So your money is working harder for you. Actually, when you stop
and think about it the Kroger shopper's card is just a glorified rebate
card as it applies to buying gas. But there's no credit check and no
inquiry on your credit reports needed for shopper's cards, so it's a nice
added benefit with virtually no hassle.
Of course, if you want the convenience of a credit card, then that's why
Kroger offers the 1-2-3 rewards card. But if the goal is just to get cheaper
gas, you don't really need it.
