I have a Chase CC that I had performed a balance transfer on several months ago because they were running a promotion for a 2.9% rate till the balance was paid off. It's a balance of about $3,500.
Last month I totally spaced and missed my payment date. I made an on-line transfer from my Chase Checking the very next day, but had already noticed they hit me with a $39 late fee. Within one day they had the fee posted, boy they don't waste any time! I called the number on the back of the card and asked for them to refund the late fee based on all the business I do with Chase and the fact that this was a isolated incident. I have no other late payments, ever!
I was quickly told that there are no reversals and the company was taking a hard line against this kind of stuff these days. When I asked to speak to a supervisor I was told they were busy but she would "ask" one of them to call me, but not to be surprised if they didn't. As she predicted, no one ever called.
Since I was only 1 day late I didn't have much concern that it would effect my credit score as I doubt they would report this, but I wasn't even thinking about how it would effect my interest rate.
I looked at my most recent statement for that account last night and my interest rate has now jumped to 27.7%! And it now seems that they not only canceled my 2.9% rate for late payment, but they retroactively applied this new rate! I am now looking at a monthly payment of $165!
Before I transfer this balance to another card, I was wondering if anyone has any advice/back door number that I should try to get this situation reversed? Any suggestions?
Two thoughts..
1. Call again. And again if necessary. There's a backdoor number for Chase in the stickied thread at the top of the CC forum. One of them specifically says APR reduction.
2. Set up auto pay with every CC company that allows this (Chase does).
Sorry you got blasted after just one day, but in this economy it's every man (and CC company) for himself.
Definitely call back again. i dont think they will reverse your new apr but they may take off the $39 late fee.
Everything helps
Afterwards, BT that to another card as quickly as possible
I called the backdoor number listed for a Chase ARP specialist and it ended up sending me to the front line folks, but they transferred me promptly with no questions.
I spoke to a very nice man named Jack and while he told me that the company was taking a hard line in not offering to refund the late fee, he would review my accounts and see what he could do.
After about 2 or 3 minutes he came back on the line and acknowledged that I have no history of other late payments and do a lot of business with Chase (Mortgage, 2 cars, 4 credit cards etc) he was more than willing to reinstate me into the 2.9% program I was on. Total of 7 minutes on the phone and just about everything was fixed.
I have to admit I literally had all the info populated into the BOA website to do a balance transfer since I didn't expect they would help me. I was rather surprised everything went so smooth.

Alright chris way to go
i am very happy for you
I alway say
call, call again, and call some more. You just never know
I would definitely have an automatic payment done to your accounts just to avoid this situation again
By the way, welcome to the forums
