if you are below a 580 I would suggest a secured card... once you get in the neighborhood of 600 I would apply for unsecured.

Just to add.. Always app for unsecured nRewards if you are worried about approval because they will counter offer the secured version

+1

And their secured card is GREAT as a secured card.  I got mine in Feb 2013, by May 2013 they approved me for a car loan (I ended up with 0% auto maker financing).  In Nov (less than 1 year later) they approved me for $17,500 in nCashRewards.  My card should graduate at the end of Feb which means I will get the security deposit back, a higher CL on the card and a lower APR.  Regardless of what they approve me for I've made that my 15yo son's card for his daily use.  Having a higher limit on it will make me feel better when he flys alone.

NFCU nCashRewards VISA - $20,000 | NFCU nRewards $10,000
AMEX Costco TrueEarnings $5,000 | AMEX Delta Gold $1,500
Chase SWA VISA $5,000 | Chase Slate $3,500 | Chase Amazon Rewards VISA $3,000
HSN Mastecard $3,500
