This is almost certainly the correct explanation.  Browser choice could be one of the factors that select whether you get A or B, but there will be other (potentially random) factors too.

just for kicks I checked this last night with a Chrome incognito tab, did not see the regular Gold.

It could be a random thing with browsers, could be related to IP address as well - I know there have been many reports of people using a VPN to show their location as Houston TX when their real IP won't give them the best sign-up offers.
