Once you spend $500 or more in the year, the current program offers rewards for both in-store and out-of-store purchases. Upgrades into the rewards program occur in February. The current program is ending May 31. Something is coming, but that announcement won't occur until May 4th.
Having an Amex could be useful since it has no annual fee, some places only accept Amex, and the extra account reporting demonstrates how you handle your finances. I might wait, however, until the new program is announced.
