This week I tried to redeem points for a big gift card and long story short it was a huge fiasco (4 calls totaling 1.5 hours and multiple different answers from customer service reps). There were shipping issues, I was given 50 different answers, my gift card was cancelled, reinstated, mr points were taken and then credited back. It was a mess. Is it acceptable or common to ask for some kind of compensation in the form of points for my time or should I just let it go? I wouldn't cause a ruckus but maybe an email to Amex is in order?
I'd also like to mention that all CSRs were very kind but it was still an extremely annoying and time consuming experience (and it's not even resolved quite yet!
You can try complaining on the facebook page or on the Amex Community Forum. You might (or might not) get more than just an apology.
And then we have to ask why you are redeeming MR for gift cards!

+1 That was the first question that came to my mind!

Haha, I knew I would get that question! I'm an economy flyer for the most part so I never get the huuuuge redemption values that others sometimes get. I was making a jewelry purchase and decided to save 500 dollars. By the way the Tiffany's MR redemption value is 1 cent per point so it's much better than many others that they offer. Overall, you should use your points for what makes you happy and this time it was jewelry (minus the amex debacle).
Even with economy flight you can get pretty good redemptions i think 2 points per would not be that difficult :-) Its interesting to see how other people use points for things other than travel.
