Re: My stimulus check is...

Maybe we should be thankful that we received anything.

The origional proposal would have excluded people with 0 tax liability from receiving anything.  The IRS has had the calculator on their website for months and you could have checked that.

There were a lot of provisions and while people are upset that you didn't get $600 that they incorrectly assumed they were going to get, remember that they did get ALL of their taxes back....every last penny....they probably also received more due to EIC and child tax credits.

The people getting the extra $600 for a couple ended up having a tax liability...meaning they didn't get all the taxes taken out returned....

P.S. My tax liability is 0...and I know what to expect...don't blame the government or IRS for assumptions.

Re: My stimulus check is...

We messed up and claimed our 21 year old daughter (full-time student) as a dependent.  That claim could have gone either way.  Now .. she doesn't get the payment for her ... nor do we (because it only applies if they are under 17.)

If our tax savings had been significant as a result of claiming her ... it wouldn't be an issue ... but it wasn't and we (she) would have come out $200 ahead if we hadn't claimed her.

Too bad I didn't get my act together in time to weigh the pros and cons of claiming her vs not claiming her ... ahead of time.  As it is ... I filed hers really early, but had to file an extension on my taxes because I ran into a stumbling block.

I'll be interested in seeing how long our "couple's" stimulus payment will be delayed.  I just filed today and my refund is supposed to be processed by May 15.  Hopefully, the stimulus payment for late filers will come shortly after their return is processed.

We ran in to the same thing with our daughters. Both are still dependents, but they did have some income from part-time jobs while in school. We definitely benefited from their dependent status, and that wasn't going to change, but like you, we didn't get extra, as they are over 16, and they don't get anything, as they were claimed as dependents. So what's that all about?

The older one would have squirreled the money away for med school, but the younger one would have definitely stimulated the economy, beginning with Gap and J.Crew, or the deposit on her new off-campus apartment.

Re: My stimulus check is...

Maybe this would work for Dawn, but we mercilessly milk dependents! This was the last year for DD#1, though.

There is some sort of provision for those who couldn't claim a stimulus (I'm sorry, but that sounds so vaguely porno) this year to get it next year. I'm hoping that as the dust settles, enough of us will start harassing our Washington reps to get this age group included retroactively and let them receive a check next year.

Lord knows, most 17 to 22-year-olds do a lot for the economy! If they have earned income, they should qualify as well.

I started looking into the amendment route and ran across a reference that said that anyone who *could* be claimed as a dependent, even if they weren't claimed would still not qualify for the stimulus payment.

I'm having to go back through my chicken scratching to see if I could honestly say that she was not a dependent.

Next year when she transfers to a four year anniversary university (sheesh .. dying brain cells and all) it will definitely pay off to claim her then.  This year, though, our educational  tax credit was pathetic since we could no longer use the Hope Tax Credit and had to use the Lifetime Learning Credit.  That one isn't too handy when you are only talking about costs associated with the local community college.  We got a whopping $117 tax credit for that one.  :-(

I'm not getting one!Smiley Sad  My wife has an ITIN and the IRS has said that if anybody on your return has an ITIN you will not get the check.Smiley Mad I don't want the money for my wife since she doesnt pay any taxes but I should get the check!  If I refile without my wife as my dependent, I would owe.
