I agree, or you could apply with the bank you have your accounts with.
Then you should avoid HSBC, they're unlikely to give him a card that will grow with his credit, CapOne probably wont either, low initail CL and higher IR,
Tell him to look into a secured card thru Addison Ave Credit Union, it looks like a good product to start with,

It was about 2 months ago. He was declined by Chase, Discover, & Kohl's but AmEx took him right away. He does have a decent income though (50K).
