Great news -- my EQ FICO just jumped to 694! And so I applied to Alliant CU today. Thanks everyone for the great advice!
Exciting. Hopefully your score won't take a hit for the inquiry and a possible new tradeline if you apply for a CC.

Lots of people here recommend joining a local credit union. In many cases they seem to be more understanding.
